Lena Dunham just issued a somewhat hollow apology for defending a Girlswriter accused of rape.

It's not the first time Dunham has apologised for a controversial statement after backlash, as many on Twitter have pointed out.

So, recognising a theme, two Australians have made a Twitter bot that can generate satiristic Dunham apologies.

Hailing from Melbourne, Jess Wheeler (creator of popular bot "Aus Gov Just Googled") and Liv Croagh, have created a Twitter bot called "Lena Dunham Apologizes," which generates fabricated apologies from the Girlscreator.

They're ridiculous, and slightly mean, but you get the gist.

Bots aside, here's a list of stories on Dunham's actual apologies. It's quite something.

A genuine apology is better than none, to be fair — not everyone apologises for outlandish media statements. But perhaps, with this level of backtracking, there's something to be learned?

Dunham hasn't had the best week. Lenny Letter, her literary newsletter with co-producer Jenni Konner, saw the public resignation of author Zinzi Clemmons, who cited her personal experience with the "well-known racism" within Dunham's circle.

There'll probably be an apology of some sort.
