A 1971 New York measure requires drivers to keep at least one hand on the steering wheel -- and some state lawmakers are trying to change that.

It makes sense. It's awful hard to let your car park itself, if you have to keep one hand on the steering wheel.

"We are just trying to have the law match up to the technology that people are using today and I think is only going to grow down the road," Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Joseph Robach told New York Daily News

Although the updated bill has passed the state Senate, it's facing opposition in the state Assembly. Not all New York lawmakers are convinced of self-driving technology safety.

"Show me how it is going to work at Second Ave. and 60th St. at rush hour and then I might support legislative change for driverless cars," Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) said.

While Krueger has a right to be skeptical, the law is preventing carmakers from even being able to convince her otherwise. Because, in order to do so, they'd have to break the law -- a catch-22.
